Gorres Goes After OPBF Title
By Ronnie Nathanielsz
Z "The Dream" Gorres is going after the Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation super flyweight title currently held by Japan’s Masayuki Arinaga who won the crown via a split decision over Thailand’s Waenpetch Chuwatana last March 26.
The manager of Gorres, well-known Cebu boxing patron Tony Aldeguer has informed OPBF president Frank Quill that he is interested in promoting the title shot of Gorres who is ranked No.1 and the mandatory challenger, possibly later this year in the Philippines.
Arinaga is scheduled to defend his title against undefeated No. 7 ranked Kuniyuki Aizawa who has a record of 9-0-1 with 7 KO's. Aldeguer told Quill he was aware of the title fight between Arinaga and Aizawa and wanted the OPBF to order the winner to fight Gorres who Aldeguer believes has "a very good chance" of winning the title.
Quill, in a quick response said "certainly we will be ordering (within the required time) Gorres’ shot at the OPBF title." Quill added he would "dearly like to see this take place in the Philippines." The respected OPBF president from Australia indicated that "there would be a period of free negotiation to decide purse, site and date for the mandatory bout. If there is no agreement, we can go to a purse bid."
Gorres has a fight record of 20-1-1 with 11 knockouts and is coming off a lopsided ten round decision over former world rated Pan Asia Boxing Association champion Deeden Kengkarun of Thailand last July 30 at the New San Andres Civic & Sports Center. Although Gorres who suffered a cut in the third round from an accidental head-butt couldn’t KO Deeden despite dropping him early in the fight, it was considered a good workout for him since his last fight against highly touted Glen Donaire in Las Vegas lasted less than two minutes.
