According to experts, the bill of materials is the core of any hardware product. It is pointed out by them that it is very much important to have a manufacturing bom or manufacturing bill of materials that is clean and accurate. This is why because, it provides details on all the parts required to build a shippable product. An engineering bill of materials will be organized according to the design of a product, but unlike that a manufacturing bom is structured to support how a product is assembled. As it is pointed out by experts, if you do not have a good manufacturing bill of materials, your product is at risk being built slowly, incorrectly or not at all. A manufacturing bill of materials contains all the parts and assemblies required to build a complete and shippable product. Packaging materials like colored boxes, CDs and printed quickstart guides are included in this. Also items that are used in the assembly process like liquid adhesive tape are also incorporated in it. Both off-the-shelf (OTS) components and custom, made-to-specification (MTS) parts belong on a manufacturing bill of materials, as well as non-tangible items like firmware. It is important as it is pointed out by experts that any item that can be found in the final boxed product needs to be included at some level of the manufacturing bill of materials. Some parts like pad printing, painting or programming will require processing before they are ready to be assembled into a final product.
